ABOUT BLOOD IN URINE
What is haematuria?
Blood in urine, also known as haematuria, causes the urine to look red, pink, or cola-coloured.
Sometimes blood in urine may not be visible, but can be detected by a urine test.
What causes blood in urine?
Blood in urine can be due to bleeding anywhere in the urinary tract.
Common causes include urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, prostate enlargement, and bladder or kidney infections.
In some cases, more serious conditions such as kidney or bladder cancer can cause blood in urine.

PATIENT JOURNEY
How is blood in urine investigated?
Blood in urine is never normal and should always be investigated by a doctor to exlude serious causes such as cancer.
Tests to determine the cause of blood in urine may include a urine tests, CT or ultrasound scan, and a procedure to look into the bladder with a camera, known as a cystoscopy.
