Male infertility

What is male infertility?
Male infertility (or subfertility) is a condition where a couple are unable to conceive a pregnancy due to problems with sperm production, function, or delivery.
Isolated male infertility accounts for ~30% of infertility. A combination of male and female factors account for a further 30% of cases.
What causes male infertility?
Sperm are made through a process called spermatogenesis, which takes place in the testes.
This process typically takes between 64 and 74 days and produces millions of sperm each day.
Problems with sperm production can be caused by hormonal imbalances, genetic conditions, infections, lifestyle factors, or environmental exposures. These issues can lead to low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm shape, all of which can affect male fertility.

How is male infertility diagnosed?
Male infertility is diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests including semen analysis.
These tests are used to identify issues with sperm production or quality, and other reproductive functions.
How is male infertility treated?
The treatment for male infertility depends on the underlying cause.
Options include lifestyle changes, medications, surgery to improve sperm production or delivery, and surgery to retrieve sperm for use in in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
