What is an artificial urinary sphincter?

An artificial urinary sphincter is an implantable device that constricts the urethra to reduce the flow of urine.

It has three components. A pump in the scrotum, a cuff the encircles the urethra and a reservoir of fluid in the abdomen.

Why is an artificial urinary sphincter required?

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. An AUS is implanted to treat moderate to severe stress urinary incontinence. It reduces or prevents the flow of urine.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a disease cause by abnormal growth of cells in the prostate. These cells have the potential to grow within the prostate and spread to other parts of the body.

What does insertion of an artificial urinary sphincter involve?

Insertion of an artificial urinary sphincter is performed under a general anaesthetic (asleep).

An incision is made in the perineum (the skin between the scrotum and anus). The cuff is placed around the urethra. Another incision is made in the groin. Through this incision the pressure regulating balloon (fluid reservoir) is placed in the abdomen and the pump in the scrotum.

All three parts of the device are then joined together.

What does insertion of an artificial urinary sphincter involve?

The device is left deactivated at the end of the procedure to allow your tissues to heal.

What is the recovery after insertion of an artificial urinary sphincter?

You will be in hospital for one to two nights following the surgery.

You will continue to be incontinence until your implant is activated. This is usually four to six weeks after surgery.

You can drive after 6 weeks.

You can usually return to work 4 weeks after the operation.
