ABOUT CIRCUMCISION

What is a circumcision?

A circumcision is a procedure to remove the foreskin in men.

Why is a circumcision required?

Circumcision in men may be performed to treat:

Tightness of the opening of the foreskin which prevents the foreskin from being pulled back over the head of the penis (phimosis).

Skin diseases affecting the foreskin, such as Balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO) / Lichen sclerosis (LS) which causes scarring and hardening of the foreskin.

Recurrent Urinary tract infection and infections under the foreskin (balanitis).

Abnormal growths (including cancers) on the foreskin or head of the penis.

Phimosis

Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin is too tight to be pulled back over the head of the penis.

Urinary tract infections

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs in any part of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most UTIs involve the lower urinary tract, specifically the bladder and urethra.

What does a circumcision involve?

Circumcision involves making incisions on the shaft of the penis and below the head of the penis. The skin between the incisions, the foreskin, is removed.

Dissolvable stitches are used to join the two cut edges of the skin together.

Circumcision is usually performed under a general anaesthetic.

What is the recovery after a circumcision?

Circumcision is performed as day surgery – you can go home on the day of the procedure.

You will have mild pain in your penis for around one week after circumcision. This can usually be managed with over the counter pain relief.

You can usually return to normal activities, including work, three to five days after a circumcision, but you need to avoid vigorous physical activity for one to two weeks.

Circumcision does not change your erections, libido (sex drive), or fertility.
