What is a hydrocoele repair?

A hydrocoele (pronounced hai·druh·seel) is a collection of fluid in the space around the testicle.

A hydrocoele repair, also known as a hydrocoelectomy, is an operation to remove the fluid and prevent it from reaccumulating.

Why is a hydrocoele repair required?

A hydrocoele repair is usually recommended if a hydrocoele is painful or is interfering with day to day activities.

Hydrocoeles aren’t dangerous. Small or painless hydrocoeles often don’t require any treatment.

A hydrocoele is a mass in the scrotum which occurs due to a build up of fluid around the testicle.

What does hydrocoele repair involve?

A hydrocoele repair involves making an incision in the scrotum and draining the fluid from the hydrocoele.

The sac which produces the fluid is removed to prevent the fluid from reaccumulating.

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic.

What is the recovery after hydrocoele repair?

Hydrocoele repair is usually performed as day surgery – you can go home on the day of the procedure.

Recovery from surgery on the scrotum can be quite slow. You will have mild to moderate pain and swelling in your scrotum for a few months after the procedure. This can usually be managed with over the counter pain relief.

You can usually return to normal activities, including work, three to five days after a hydrocoele repair, but you need to avoid vigorous physical activity for two to four weeks.

Hydrocoele repair does not affect your erections, testosterone level, or fertility.
