ABOUT PENILE PROSTHESIS

What is a penile prosthesis?

A penile prosthesis, also known as a penile implant, is a device which is surgically implanted inside the penis.

It is performed to restore erections for men with severe erectile dysfunction.

Why is a penile prosthesis required?

A penile prosthesis is used to treat severe erectile dysfunction when other treatments such as medications and injections have been unsuccessful.

Severe erectile dysfunction is commonly due to age, smoking, diabetes, or treatment for prostate problems such as prostate cancer.

A penile prosthesis can also be used to treat penile curvature in men who also have erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection which is firm enough for sexual activity.

Peyronie's disease is a condition which causes new onsetbending or deformity of the penis and pain with erections.

What does insertion of a penile prosthesis involve?

Insertion of a penile prosthesis involves implantation of three linked components:

Two cyclinders within the penis

A fluid reservoir in the abdomen

A walnut sized pump in the scrotum

The procedure is performed via an incision on the front of the scrotum, just below the penis. Sometimes, a second incision is required in the groin.

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic.

What is the recovery after insertion of a penile prosthesis?

Insertion of a penile prosthesis usually requires a two to three night stay in hospital.

You will usually have mild discomfort, swelling and bruising in your penis, scrotum and perineum for a few weeks after the procedure.

You can usually return to normal activities, including work, two to four weeks after the procedure, but you need to avoid vigorous physical activity for four to six weeks.

How does a penile prosthesis work?

The implant is completely concealed within your body. You cannot see the implant after surgery, but you will be able to feel the cylinders in your penis and the pump in your scrotum.

You can usually have sex about six weeks after insertion of a penile prosthesis.

The prosthesis is activated by squeezing the pump in your scrotum. This moves fluid from the reservoir in your abdomen to the cyclinders in your penis, giving you an erection.
