ABOUT PROSTATIC URETHRAL LIFT

What is a prostatic urethral lift?

A prostatic urethral lift (Urolift®) is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostate enlargement.

It involves placing implants into the prostate which retract the prostatic tissue which is blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder.

Why is a prostatic urethral lift required?

Prostatic urethral lift is usually performed to treat urinary symptoms due to benign enlargement of the prostate.

These symptoms may include:

Waking through the night to urinate.

Needing to pass urine frequently and urgently.

Reduced urine flow.

Difficulty starting urination.

Incomplete bladder emptying.

Prostate Enlargement

Prostate enlargement, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland that commonly occurs in men as they age. The prostate surrounds the urethra, so when it enlarges, it can press against the urethra and block urine flow.

What does a prostatic urethral lift involve?

Urolift® implants are inserted into the prostate via a telescope passed through the urethra (waterpipe).

The implants retract the prostate tissue to relieve the obstruction of the urethra. There is no cutting, heating, or removal of the prostatic tissue. Typically, 2 to 6 implants are placed, depending on the size of the prostate.

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic.

A catheter isn’t usually required at the end of the procedure.

What is the recovery from a prostatic urethral lift?

Prostatic urethral lift is usually performed as day surgery – you can go home on the day of the procedure.

You should notice gradual improvement in your urinary symptoms within two weeks of the procedure. You may notice blood in your urine and mild burning when passing urine for several days after the procedure.

You can usually return to most normal activities, including work, a few days after prostatic urethral lift.

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a procedure used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate.

Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is an operation to remove prostate tissue which is blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder. It uses a special laser to remove the excess prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow.

Prostatic water vapour therapy (Rezūm)

Prostatic water vapour therapy (Rezūm) is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostate enlargement. It uses water vapour to remove prostate tissue which is blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder.

Robotic Simple Prostatectomy

Robotic simple prostatectomy is a procedure to remove prostatic tissue which is blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. It is performed using the da Vinci robotic surgical system. It is usually performed for treatment of very large prostates.

Temporary Implanted Nitinol Device (iTIND)

Temporary implanted nitinol device (iTind) is a minimally procedure is a treatment for the management of an enlarged prostate. It involves placing a temporary implant into the prostate which reshapes the prostate.

Bladder neck incision

A bladder neck incision (BNI) is a procedure used to treat bladder neck obstruction, which causes urinary problems due to narrowing at the join between the bladder and the prostate.
